Please read this and tell me it doesn't make you mad! These people make it sound like not using a video to crochet is an accomplishment that not many people can do! Really? How do they think people crocheted before internet? I mean, come on! Videos are great to learn a new stitch but if you can't read a pattern or chart, you're not much of a crocheter in my opinion.

Hi Charlotte, I kind of get what you mean...I have never used a video to learn anything about crocheting. If you can read or follow pictures or just look at a stitch to see how it is made then why do you need a video. I have watched one video and that was to see what it was all about..and I wasn't impressed. Seems like "new" stitches aren't really new..just renamed mostly with a group of stiches..makes me smile.But I can see how it would help if you don't know where to start.. have a great day..blessings
Hello Charlotte. Agreed! Lucky those now who can use a video but neither is it the end of the world if you don't have one! There is a lot of information out there and lots of books. I personally find it much more comfortable to have the written pattern in front of me and I can go back to it time and time again. I have to sit in front of my computer to see the video!

I'm with you. Reading a pattern is a basic skill I think all new crocheters should have. Or a diagram (I can't do that yet). The videos can be more confusing sometimes because they're too fast paced. And who wants to sit at the computer the entire time they're making something?
People are weird.
Having only used videos to learn a new technique, like Tunisian in the round, I couldn't possibly get excited about someone using a pattern instead of a video. Someone needs to get a life.
I've been crocheting for a long time before computers. I am a visual and have used tutorials to see if I am doing the stich correctly. It isn't something I do as routine, but in addition to or supplement as a tool. Everybody learns at a different pace and style. In the end, it is the crochet we promote. I prefer patterns, but I am old school.
I think I've probably got a foot in both camps on this one.
I tried to teach myself to crochet for years on and off and couldn't get away with it at all.
I came to realise, by watching video's and by looking at patterns that there were two names for the same stitch, english and US terms.
It had confused me at first.
Even though I'm english, I much prefer the US terms, so I stuck with those and I've used both video's and patterns to learn.
If I get stuck on a written pattern with a stitch I've never heard of, I either google it to see pictures or if I can't make them out, I will go on you tube to watch how it's made.
I agree you need to be able to read a pattern and I think an ability to read charts is useful as well, that's what I'm trying to learn now but I have to say I do think video's can be useful as well at times.
